The 1 Essential Quality All 55cm x 40cm x 20 cm Bags & Suitcases Need

Contrary to popular belief, a 55 x 40 x 20 cm bag is not considerably smaller than a 22 x 14 x 9 inch bag.

A US-style 22x14x9 bag has a maximum capacity of 45 litres.

A 50cm x 40cm x 20cm bag has a maximum capacity of 44 gallons.

So there isn’t much of a difference in how much these bags can store.

The form is different from the carry on you may already have in your wardrobe, which is a real pain in the a$$.

That implies that if you’re travelling on an airline with a hand baggage limit of 55 x 40 x 20 cm, your old bag isn’t going to fit.

The following 50 x 40 x 20 cm and under bags will suffice:

  • Maxlite 5 International (55 x 40 x 20 cm)
  • Los Angeles IT Luggage – 55 x 36 x 18.5 cm
  • F102 Rockland Luggage – 53 x 33 x 19 cm
  • Eaglecreek Expanse measures 54 x 35 x 20 cm.
  • Backpack Osprey Farpoint 40 – 53 x 35 x 23 cm (but squashable)

What’s a few inches here and there…

If you’re wondering…

55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.65 x 15.74 x 7.87 in)

The 20 cm depth makes it difficult to find suitable bags. US baggage is typically 9 inches deep.

And, no, you won’t get away with just your somewhat larger bag.

The most common airline with that size limit, Air China, is rigorous regarding carry-on luggage size.

And Ryanair, another prominent airline that uses this capacity, was famous for wanting to charge customers £1 to use the onboard bathroom. Ryanair is not an easy company to work with

As a result, you will require a bag that is smaller than the size restriction.

Above all, any excellent 55 x 40 x 20 cm baggage will have this one vital attribute.

It needs to be light!

This is due to the fact that all airlines that employ the 55 x 40 x 20 centimetre carry on limit have severe weight constraints.

Let us investigate.

Limits on Carry-On Weight

I’m not sure which airline you intend to fly with.

But I’m guessing it’s in the table below.

The following airlines and their carry-on weight limitations utilise a 55 x 40 x 20 centimetre carry-on size:

50 x 40 x 20 Airline Carry On Weight Limit
Air China 11 lbs
Ryanair (paid) 22 lbs
Asiana Airlines 22 lbs
Blue Panorama 22 lbs
Carpatair 11 lbs
Corsair 26.4 lbs
Croatia Airlines 17.6 lbs
Helvetic 11 lbs
Iceland Air 22 lbs
Jettime 11 lbs
Korean Air 22 lbs
Pegasus 17.6 lbs
Royal Air Maroc 22 lbs
SunExpress 13 lbs
TAROM 22 lbs
TUI 22 lbs
Ukraine Int. 15 lbs
Vueling

22 lbs

Other international carry-on size limitations can be found on this page.

All of these airlines have very tight weight restrictions!

As a result, you must carefully consider the weight of your luggage while it is empty. It is the most important factor to consider when purchasing 50 x 40 x 20 cm luggage.

When empty, a lot of carry-on bags might weigh 8 or 9 pounds.

Because you don’t want to use up a major percentage of your weight allotment before packing any clothes or things, it’s better to pick a lighter-weight luggage.

Assume you’re travelling with Air China with an 8-pound luggage. That leaves you with only 3 pounds for your possessions!

Your major issue isn’t getting beyond the sizer. It’s passed the baggage scales!

5 pairs of socks will weigh around 1 pound.

3 t-shirts will most likely weigh approximately 1 pound. A single pair of jeans may weigh 1 pound.

And there you have it, you’ve exhausted your Air China weight allowance!

That’s before you consider carrying a laptop or other bulky stuff.

So, when it comes to your 55cm x 40cm x 20cm bag, the weight is everything!

Baggage less than 55 x 40 x 20 cm

Consider the TravelPro Maxlite 5 International Spinner if you want baggage that is as close to 55x40x20 as feasible.

It’s intended to stretch the size restriction to its utmost and provide you with plenty of storage space.

It weighs 5.4 pounds, which is light for baggage of this calibre.

Travelpro makes excellent baggage, and I would generally advise you to get it.

But…

Slow down… Do You Really Need A 40cm Bag?

You probably don’t want a bag that is 40 cm broad because you won’t be able to use it on most other airlines.

Many airlines will not allow you to bring luggage that is wider than 35 cm.

If you don’t frequently fly on airlines that accept 40 cm wide luggage, a bag like the Maxlite 5 international may wind up accumulating dust.

International Cabin Luggage Has a Sweet Spot

I normally recommend 21 x 14 x 8 inches for the “goldilocks” size of carry-on luggage that will fit most flights throughout the world.

That’s around 53 x 35 x 20 cm. It just has a 38-liter capacity, but you may use it anywhere around the world.

With this in mind, consider the following alternatives:

Los Angeles IT Luggage

The IT Luggage World’s Lightest is my favourite lightweight luggage.

55 x 36 x 18.5 cm Dimensions ( 21.8 x 14.2 x 7.3 inches)

1.73 kg in weight (3.81 lbs)

The Los Angeles is not too expensive, and while it will not last a lifetime, it will suffice for several journeys.

Rockland Luggage also makes a tiny bag that fits inside these parameters.

53 x 33 x 19 cm (21′′ x 13′′ x 7.5′′)

6 pound weight

While the Rockland has a lower capacity of 32 litres, it also comes with a 14 litre tote bag.

If your airline allows you to bring a personal item in addition to a carry on, you will be able to bring more luggage.

The Eaglecreek Expanse International Carry On Bag is almost the ideal size for globetrotting.

54 x 35 x 20 cm Dimensions

2.56 kg in weight (5 lbs 11 oz)

Another alternative, if possible, is to consider carry-on backpacks.

My personal favourite is the Osprey Farpoint 40, and while the quoted dimensions are significantly larger, you can easily fit a backpack into a sizer provided you don’t fill it too full.

Furthermore, because it lacks wheels and a frame, the Farpoint 40 weighs only 3.5 pounds.

The Decision

If you search closely, you can locate 55 x 40 x 20 cm baggage.

However, you should avoid purchasing a bag that is excessively hefty because your airline will most likely have a stringent weight limit.

When measuring luggage, keep in mind that wheels and handles do count.

When travelling carry on only with Air China, you must travel light because you may only pack 11 lbs.

When dealing with excessive weight constraints, it may be preferable to forego the wheels and instead use a backpack if you are fit and capable of doing so.
